Laser cataract surgery night

On Thursday the 31st, we had another successful laser cataract surgery education night. A number of local optometrists and optometry students attended for the CPD attracting evening which included a live demonstration of the laser in action.

Since the last one, the number of patients that have had this surgery has grown providing more data of its results.

Victoria Parade Surgical  Centre surgeons have now performed just over 200 cases of which about 140 were performed by myself. Eye surgeons still seem to be reluctant to transition to this new surgery. This is not surprising, as surgeons in general are very conservative by nature and reluctant to try something new that has a learning curve and might affect their results. An audit of my own results shows that now more than 75% of patients are achieving refractive results within 0.5 diopters of the desired aim.  I still have had no complications.

There is now no argument , after the Brendan vote paper, that shown that phaco times are down by 70%. This means that anyone who does not use this technology in cases of low endothelial counts such is Fuch’s, is open to litigation if corneal decompensation subsequently ensues.
