The three femtosecond cataract surgery talks have been tremendously successful. They started of in East Melbourne which included a live demonstration of the laser itself then we moved on to Bendigo at the wine bank restaurant and finally last night at the Mill restaurant in Echuca.
It actually surprised me how most attendees were not that familiar with the concept.
By the end of the evening, I think that it is fair to say that I was able to present evidence that convinced most people about the benefits of the laser cataract surgery. The presentations include actual video footage of conventional, phacoemulsification compared to video footage of the femto laser cataract surgery.
I presented actual published data including the recently published article in Clinical and experimental ophthalmology which showed a 70% reduction in phaco energy when using he laser
Anyhow, due to its runaway success we will be holding another femto nite in East Melbourne, again with a live demonstration

Disappointingly , Alcon has recalled their Catchet lens. This lens was available to use in patients who are myopic and not suitable for either Laser corrective survey or refractive lens exchange. Unfortunately, this lens has been associated with a high rate of endothelial cell loss in about 1% of patients. Alcon is not planning to re-introduce this lens. It therefore means that there are very few options for patients who fall into this category. Patients who have had this lens implanted are advised to be closely monitored with regular endothelial cell counts and have the lens explanted if they show a significant decline.

The femto nite is rapidly approaching and will be this coming Monday 26th August. It will kick of in my offices on level 4 where finger foods will be available. We will then head down to VPSC on level 1 for a demonstration of the laser in action. Please arrive at my office at 6.00PM.
A second talk will be held at the Wine Bank restaurant in Bendigo at 6:30 PM on the 28th and a third nite will be in Echuca on the 29th at the Mill restaurant.
Needles to say these two country ones will not have a live demo.
